Participants will go out and draw at different locations using materials they find on the spot. The resulting narrative can either follow classic comic guidelines or be developed in a more free-association style. The hunt for the perfect comic may give rise to a collection of observations or thoughts, overheard words, dialogues or sounds. Some may patiently search for significant moments, scenes, or sudden flashes of meaning, others will see it as a game: A game that Ulli Lust herself plays to brilliant results.

Phrontistery

Comics in India are being treated as cheap objects. People feel they have no inherent value, and are often discarded. Through a documentation of different raddiwalas (paper recyclers) who sort through the pile of books and magazines they get and rescue comics from there, Aarthi will talk about books that are representative of different points in the comics jouney of India: from the Pattachitra and Kaavad, to Indrajal Comics, to Amar Chitra Katha, to Tinkle Comics to Graphic Novels and finally zines. One of the books she will have with her is a rescued comic!

14.00–17.00Gendered Representations in ComicsWorkshop

Phrontistery

The workshop on gender and comics is basically to take people through different images, that Aarthi has collected for here research project and at each image, stop to have a discussion, as well as a visual/written reaction. We could engage in detail with each piece of representation, and have a conversation about it. Then we would either note down our observations on context, character, creator to understand why that image exists in that way, or re-imagine/ re-write that image.

13.00–15.00The Futures of ComicsSymposium

Maskenliebhabersaal

Symposium | Part 1

The digitalisation and making of books available online has an impact both on who reads them and how they are read. What is the significance of transplanting a private collection into an online archive? This raises questions about different forms of digital archiving, accessibility and copyright, and both the possibilities and the perils of web-based archives. In The Futures of Comics (s.S. XY) four experts and enthusiasts of the Ninth Art have been invited to bring samples from their own private libraries to Lucerne to digitalise over the course of the festival.

Part 2

For each comic star there are hundreds who don’t make it into the spotlight, and it’s not always a question of talent: marketing and presentation also play a huge role in the process. Swiss comic artists talk about their strategies and how they deal with the changing prospects and demands of a (post) digital age. Some use traditional distribution, others take on their own online-marketing; artists work solo or as a collective, engaging with their public in informal environments, and acquiring thousands of followers on social media. Following the symposium the Réseau BD Suisse invites guests to a reception for further discussion.

Rrring! Zziing! DingDong! Bing! Veloglocke.

14.30Mytholitics3: Collective Narration On The MovePodium discussion

Maskenliebhabersaal

India’s comic scene is on the rise. Collectives from New Delhi to Mumbai to Calcutta are appearing at a network of festivals seemingly from out of thin air. Art colleges in Ahmedabad and Bangalore are establishing a place for sequential narration in their curricula. The act of drawing, along with alternative DIY practises and new online publication possibilities are all part of the revolt against social discrimination and the patriarchy.  In this panel some of the prominent members of India’s comic scene give us a peek into this vibrant phenomenon.
